“Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.” (1 Peter 4:10 NIV)
As a final instruction on living according to God’s will and loving fellow believers, Peter points to the spiritual gifts that the Holy Spirit gives to every Christian. These gifts differ from person to person. Some have the gift of leadership, others the gift of encouragement, and yet another the ability to teach clearly, and so on. We are called to use these diverse gifts responsibly. Each person can contribute to the well-being of others through the unique abilities God has entrusted to them. In this way, the church displays a rich diversity that reflects God’s greatness and creativity.
The fact that God has given each person unique gifts also means that no one possesses every gift, and no one is suited for every task. That is a liberating truth. You do not have to fulfill a role within the church that does not fit who you are. You are called to serve “with the strength God provides” (1 Peter 4:11 NIV). At times this may require stepping outside your comfort zone, but God does not expect you to do what lies beyond the abilities He has given you. You are called to use the gifts you have received, not to focus on the gifts you do not have.
