“Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.” (1 Peter 4:8 NIV)
Christians live by God’s forgiveness. His love covers their sins, enabling them to stand before Him once again. He no longer holds their past failures against them. What freedom this brings! Psalm 32:1 (NIV) expresses it beautifully: “Blessed is the one whose transgressions are forgiven, whose sins are covered.”
God then calls us to extend that same spirit of forgiveness to others. Our love should cover their sins. In this way, damaged relationships can be restored. This is not an easy process, but it is necessary if we want to live in God’s light and remain united as believers.
We can only forgive others when our hearts are filled with God’s love. Only then are we able to love other people—even our enemies.
God’s forgiveness is always accompanied by justice. “Covering sins” does not mean ignoring wrongdoing or allowing harmful patterns to continue unchecked. The Lord brings evil into the light, calls us to turn away from it completely, and then graciously offers His forgiveness.
