“They do not live the rest of their earthly lives for evil human desires, but rather for the will of God.” (1 Peter 4:2 NIV)
Peter was a disciple of Jesus Christ. For three years, he listened to Jesus’ teaching and witnessed His perfect love and obedience to God. Little by little, Peter learned what it meant to follow Jesus. Shortly before Jesus returned to heaven, He entrusted Peter with the care of His followers. Peter became one of the leaders of the early church and wrote several letters to encourage and instruct fellow believers.
In today’s passage, Peter emphasizes that believers are “done with sin” (1 Peter 4:1 NIV). Before coming to faith, their way of life stood in opposition to God’s purpose. But now that they know Christ, they are called to follow His example. This brings about a profound transformation in their lives.
Following Jesus will likely involve suffering. Yet believers should not be discouraged by this. Such suffering can have a refining and purifying effect on their lives. It helps them turn away from sin and devote themselves fully to God.
