“While Jesus was having dinner at Matthew’s house, many tax collectors and sinners came and ate with Him and His disciples.” (Matthew 9:10 NIV)
Now that Matthew has come to know the Lord Jesus, he opens his home to Him. Jesus is the guest, yet at the same time He is the host. The gathering revolves around Him.
This is not merely a private meeting between Jesus and Matthew. Many others join them as well. It is a diverse company of tax collectors, people known as “sinners,” and faithful followers of Jesus—all gathered together because Jesus is there. He is the Great Physician, and He alone has the remedy for eternal life (see Matthew 9:12). None of those present can do without Him, and none of them are left without His help. He is not ashamed to be seen with them or to share a meal with them. After all, it is His mission to show people the way to the Father.
This meal in Matthew’s house beautifully illustrates the Lord’s Supper, or Holy Communion, which believers still celebrate today. People from many different backgrounds come together because they need Jesus. He welcomes them all and offers Himself to them. The variety of people gathered around Jesus is a living testimony to His grace.
