“When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place. And suddenly there came from heaven a sound like a mighty rushing wind, and it filled the entire house where they were sitting. And divided tongues as of fire appeared to them and rested on each one of them.” (Acts 2:1-3)
The waiting was over! The sound of a mighty gust of wind filled the entire room where Jesus’ disciples had gathered. The Holy Spirit came in the form of wind, fire, and tongues.
• His coming was audible in the sound of the wind. In the Bible, a stormy wind was also a sign of God’s glory (2 Samuel 22:11).
• The Holy Spirit came visibly in the light of “tongues of fire.” In the Bible, fire is a symbol of light, but also of purification.
• The Holy Spirit made Himself heard in the way Jesus’ followers began to speak.
The Holy Spirit is not a vague, impersonal force. The Holy Spirit is the Person who directs our attention to the glory of God the Father and the Son. He makes the light of Jesus the Son and His cleansing work visible in our lives. He gives us the words to testify to the love and work of both the Father and the Son.
Jesus, who seemed unreachable in heaven, has united Himself with believers in the Person of the Spirit. The Holy Spirit imbues our hearts and our minds. In this way, He establishes our focus: toward God and the world around us.
