“And while staying with them He ordered them not to depart from Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father, which, He said, ‘you heard from Me.’” (Acts 1:4)
“You will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth.” (Acts 1:8)
Jesus had promised that after His return to heaven, He would not leave His followers alone. When the time came for Him to return to His heavenly Father, Jesus repeated this promise that His disciples would be empowered by the Holy Spirit (Acts 1:8).
The Holy Spirit, just like God the Father and Jesus the Son, is a Person. It is a mystery: three Persons, and yet one God. Although imperfect, this analogy can be helpful: you can compare the Trinity to water that appears in the form of vapor, ice, and liquid. Three forms, and yet all three are water.
In His physical form, Jesus was always in one place at one time. By sending the Holy Spirit, Jesus is present in every believer, anywhere in the world. The Holy Spirit helps believers to keep following Jesus. He wants to give us the words, the strength, and the courage to testify about Jesus. By receiving the Holy Spirit, every believer also receives a mission: tell others who I, Jesus, am, and who I want to be for every person who seeks peace with God.
