“The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field. When a man found it, he hid it again, and then in his joy went and sold all he had and bought that field.” (Matthew 13:44 NIV)
In a brief parable, Jesus explains the value of the kingdom of heaven. This kingdom represents the new world that God is creating, where He will dwell with humanity and reign justly. While this kingdom is already present, it’s mostly invisible. It’s like a treasure hidden in the ground; many people pass by without realizing what’s buried there, continuing on with their lives. However, someone who discovers this treasure and understands the greatness of God’s kingdom is willing to give up everything to become part of it. Excited by this revelation, they are ready to sacrifice everything for this one gift — because everything else pales in comparison. Others may be surprised that this person suddenly finds their old life unimportant. Yet, their greatest desire is to live close to God forever and enjoy His blessings each day, and even more abundantly in the new world to come.
Have you discovered God’s Kingdom yet? Do you find it valuable, and where exactly does that value lie? What are you willing to give up to obtain this treasure?
