“You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.” (Exodus 20:7)
God doesn’t want us to abuse His name. This includes more than swearing; it encompasses any mocking or ridiculing of God. God demands that we honour and respect Him. It is essential that we approach His name with reverence, never casually or indifferently as is so often the case today.
Less obvious but no less serious is the hypocritical use of God’s name. Pious talk is all too often not God glorifying, but utilitarian. God hates it when we misuse His name for our own ends. He desires that we be sincere as we honour Him.
For Christians, using God’s name appropriately is essential. The first commandment demands that we serve and honour the Lord God alone. Do you fulfil this commandment by using His name with reverence? Does your use of God’s name line up with the Biblical image of God?
I don’t think there is a single person who always uses God’s name perfectly, and this is due to our sinful human nature. Nevertheless, we have no excuse and must always try to use God’s name with reverence and love. We can motivate others to do the same and gently resist the improper use of His holy name. Afterall, the Lord Himself guards the sanctity of His name. May your desire to sanctify His name be lifelong!
