“No one has ever seen God; God the only Son, who is at the Father’s side, He has made Him known.” (John 1:18)
God forbade Israel to make idols. Why? One objection is that an image always falls short of reality. An image of God can never be more than a mediocre imitation of who He really is. Such a symbol becomes a god that deviates from the Lord, the Creator who reveals Himself fully in Jesus Christ.
Worshiping God with images makes Him sad and angry. Even the idea that He would reveal Himself in an image is wrong. But even without a physical image we can conceive an inaccurate image of God in our thoughts. As believers we can have an idea of God that doesn’t coincide with who He is. Again, we need the leading of the Holy Spirit’s teaching through the Bible to help us. Our knowledge of God can deepen, and our misconceptions can be corrected. This is a daily necessity. With this focus we can become more like Jesus Christ, and we can reflect something of Him in our lives. We can become stronger to resist temptation to serve other gods. The Holy Spirit is joyfully willing to help.
