“You shall have no other gods before me.” (Exodus 20:3)
God had freed Israel; no one else had treated them so well. That’s why the first commandment is of such vital importance: they were to believe only in Him. God does not want His people to honour other gods. He has the rights to their exclusive devotion.
The purpose of the first commandment is not to deny the existence of other gods, but to forbid Israelites to honour them. Israel would inhabit Canaan amongst peoples who prayed to other gods for help with seedtime and harvest and fertility for man and beast. Those peoples also sought contact with deceased family members, asking for wisdom and counsel. In contrast, the Israelites had to place their trust in God for all their needs. God does not want His people to become involved with the polytheism of the other nations. The command is short and to the point: you shall not serve any other gods.
The devil hopes that you will focus your attention, your energy, and your means on other gods so that you cannot really serve God, and consequently, your relationship with Him is neglected. The devil’s goal is to have you turn away from God by ignoring His commandments.
