The Lord Jesus had twelve disciples who followed Him closely. However, one of them, Judas Iscariot, became deeply disappointed in Jesus.
The chief priests, scribes, and elders of the people wanted to kill Jesus. In exchange for financial compensation, Judas gave them the golden tip on where and when they could capture Jesus, without sparking an uprising among the people.
Judas’ plan succeeded. But when Jesus was actually arrested and innocently sentenced to death, Judas changed his mind. The priests reacted harshly and indifferently: We don’t care! That’s a problem for you, not us! Judas saw no other way than to hang himself.
What an incredibly sad story. Jesus’ words come true here: “Woe to that man by whom the Son of Man is betrayed! It would have been better for that man if he had not been born.” (Mark 14:21).
When we consider the impact of Judas’ betrayal, we can imagine his despair. Yet he did not have to commit suicide. Another disciple, Peter, disowned Jesus three times. But he received forgiveness and was given a position of responsibility in the early church. A murderer who was crucified next to Jesus was allowed to go with Him to paradise. Never let anyone convince you that death is the only way out. With God, forgiveness and new life are always possible!
