Respecting our Creator

“Woe to him who strives with Him who formed him, a pot among earthen pots!
Does the clay say to him who forms it, ‘What are you making?’” (Isaiah 45:9)

God created us. This defines our position towards Him, even now. As our Creator, He has authority over our lives. He decides what is good, both on a global level and in our personal lives. We must respect Him in this. After all, He “made the earth and created man on it.” (Isaiah 45:12) It would be absurd to question His plans or call Him to account.

Yet that is what humans often do. We disagree with God’s decisions. We think He should intervene in certain situations — and in a way that suits us. We act as if we are wiser than He is!

The prophet Isaiah uses an example to show how ridiculous such an attitude is: it is like a lump of clay arguing with the potter because it does not like his work.

How do you feel about the idea that God has absolute control over world events and your life? Are you happy to entrust that to Him, or would you rather be in control yourself?
