As our Creator, God sets the rules

“You shall follow My rules and keep My statutes and walk in them. I am the Lord your God.” (Leviticus 18:4)

When God created the world, He also put it in order. He determined the sequence of day and night; He set the boundaries of the sea and the land; He created different kinds of animals, each of which was given its own habitat. Humans were also given certain boundaries. God established marriage between a man and a woman as the basis of society and gave humans stewardship over creation.

Later, when the people of Israel were on their way to their new land, they received more detailed instructions, for example in Leviticus 18 and 19. These are not all directly applicable to every situation in every country on earth, but they do give a clear signal. The Lord God gives rules about matters such as sexual relationships, the interaction between parents and children, the worship of idols, and fair trade and judgment. As a refrain, He says: “I am the LORD your God.” As our Creator and God, He has every right to set the boundaries for us to live in. But people have great difficulty accepting those boundaries. The first humans, Adam and Eve, already transgressed God’s precepts. This has remained a problem throughout history, and even today countless people ignore His beneficial laws — with dramatic consequences.
