‘Ah, you who hide deep from the Lord your counsel […] Shall the potter be regarded as the clay, that the thing made should say of its maker, “He did not make me”; or the thing formed say of him who formed it, “He has no understanding”?’ (Isaiah 29:15-16)
Once again, we read a passage from Isaiah that compares God to a potter and people to pottery made by Him. This time, we hear the clay speaking scornfully: “That potter doesn’t know us at all… He doesn’t even understand what he’s doing!”
There’s no need to explain Isaiah’s example further; it speaks for itself. The bold words of these objects are, of course, completely inappropriate. How would their maker not know and understand them…
Yet many people behave like this. They think they can hide their evil plans from the Lord God, so that they can go about their business undisturbed. Do you recognize this behavior in yourself?
The Bible tells us that God sees exactly what we do, what we say, and even what we think. Psalm 139 explores this theme. The psalmist realizes that he cannot hide from God anywhere. “You discern my thoughts from afar” (Psalm 139:2). “Even before a word is on my tongue, behold, O Lord, You know it altogether.” (Psalm 139:4). He also explains why God knows him so well: “For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb.” (Psalm 139:13)
Family members or close friends may know you well. But God knows you even better, from your earliest days, before you were even born!
