“For You formed my inward parts; You knitted me together in my mother’s womb. I praise You, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made.” (Psalm 139:13-14)
The first humans were personally formed by God. The same was not true for their children and subsequent descendants. You and I were born as babies after about nine months of pregnancy and then grew up—a very ordinary, natural process that has happened billions of times worldwide.
Yet the Bible says that we are all “fearfully and wonderfully made.” The Lord God was closely involved in our creation:
“My frame was not hidden from You, when I was being made in secret, intricately woven in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in Your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me, when as yet there was none of them.” (Psalm 139:15-16).
The prophet Isaiah compared man to a vase being formed by a potter. This psalm describes him as a piece of embroidery and a cloth being woven by God. All these images reveal something of a conscious, artistic process of creation. The birth of a child is never “accidental” or “coincidental.” God is personally involved in the creation and life of every human being.
